Mott The Hoople

I've always been a huge David Bowie fan, and when I first heard the song "All The Young Dudes", many years ago, I initially thought that it might have been Bowie singing because the sound was definitely reminiscent of Bowie.....but I found out later that it was performed by a band called Mott The Hoople.  After doing a little research, I found out that the band was on the verge of breaking up in the early 70s, and Bowie found out and persuaded them to stay together, and even offered them "Suffragette City" from his then yet-to-be-released album "Ziggy Stardust".  Turns out that Bowie was a huge fan for several years, and hated to see them break-up.  The band ended up not using the song, but instead used another Bowie tune called "All The Young Dudes", which turned out to be their biggest hit.  You can definitely hear Bowie's influence on this song.








Using the glam rock craze as their launch pad, the band straddled the widening gap between the teen-pop market and the college circuit.  It yielded two UK hits, "Honaloochie Boogie" and "All the Way from Memphis".  "All the Way From Memphis" is also featured in the movie, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.  Sadly, Mott the Hoople's new found popularity ultimately helped lead to the band's break-up.  It such a shame, because these guys really rocked and I loved their sound.

In the 90s, Ian Hunter, lead singer from MTH, had gained popularity with his song "Cleveland Rocks", which was used in the opening for the "Drew Carey Show".  In 2009, the band reunited for several reunion concerts and they were well received, with sold out shows.  If they ever decide to perform in the U.S., I would definitely be going to that show!

Prom Night

Prom season is upon us!  Remember when prom wasn't the outrageous expense that it is today?  At my prom we didn't need to rent a limo, my boyfriend at the time had borrowed his dad's Lincoln which everyone had dubbed "the boat".  My dress didn't cost thousands of dollars, and it certainly didn't have a designer label.  Also, it would never occur to me to go to a tanning salon prior to the prom.  Me and my friend would usually park ourselves in some lawn chairs out back and try to get some sun prior to the prom to get some color...but I recall it being a little chilly since it was still April.  We danced the night away to Hall & Oats, J. Geils Band, Soft Cell, Quarterflash and many other 80s bands of the day...hell we probably even danced to SUPERFREAK!  Anyway, prom was just a fun "grownup" night out and was our first taste of "adulthood".  Everyone would always go drinking before and after the prom (typical teenagers), and of course there was always someone who overdid it and ended up puking in the bathroom...Aaahh those were the days!  Prom night also was a night where girls/boys would lose their virginity...if they haven't already.  Most kids I knew hadn't back then, but I'm sure thats not the case today.  I remember I had cut my hair short a few months prior, because I wanted to look like Olivia Newton-John...her video "Physical" was incredibly popular at the time and I loved her hair in that!  I know I sound like an old lady complaining about kids today, but seriously, the prom is not the same as it was back in my day....Damn! Did I just say "back in my day"?? Starting to sound like my parents!

R.I.P. Yvette Vickers

A mummified body believed to be that of an early Playboy Playmate has been found in a dilapidated Beverly Hills home after evidently being undiscovered for up to a year, authorities said on Monday. 

The house was owned by Yvette Vickers, a B-movie actress who was named Playboy's Miss July in 1959, almost six years after the men's magazine was first published.
Neighbor Susan Savage found the body last Wednesday when her suspicions were aroused by old letters and cobwebs in the mailbox. The house was packed with boxes, and at least one window was broken. A space heater was running in the upstairs room where the body was lying on the floor.

Although Vickers generally kept to herself in the neighborhood, Savage decided to check on her. 

"The letters seemed untouched and were starting to yellow," Savage said. "I just had a bad feeling." 

"We don't know if it's a Jane Doe or a John Doe," said Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.

"We've all been crying about this," Savage said. "Nobody should be left alone like that." 

Vickers, born Yvette Vedder in Kansas City, Missouri, was variously described as being either 82 or 74. She was briefly married twice during the 1950s.

Her film credits include 1958's "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" and 1959's "Attack of the Giant Leeches." Her last feature role was in a 1990 horror called "Evil Spirits."

New 8 Track Players!

About a month ago, I acquired two very groovy 8track players on Craigslist. Sadly, my dog passed away shortly after that and I've been a bit depressed since then, so I haven't been posting much, but I'm feeling a bit better each day and can now talk about him without bursting into tears. Anyway, here are my recent fabulous finds!

I've acquired another Panasonic TNT Dynamite player.  I already have one in blue now all I need to do is find one in yellow, white and the ever elusive smoked clear version.  

I'm dedicating this post to my bestest buddy who recently passed away.  He was almost 16 years old!  Sadly, he had a tumor on his spinal cord which caused paralysis (which I could have dealt with), but the fact that there was blood in his urine had the Vet concerned that he did not have long to live.  I had to make the difficult decision to put him down.  It broke my heart to do this, but I think it was for the best.  He was miserable, and had given up even trying to walk.  Late at night when I'm drifting off to sleep, I still think I can hear him breathing and moving around at the foot of my bed.  I miss you little guy!

 Aspen was about 11 years old in this photo.  He's begging to come inside.  He only enjoyed being outside, if you were out there with him.  He always had to be near me and hated if I was behind closed doors.

This was our last trip to Cape May, NJ.  He was just a little shy of 15 when this photo was taken.  He was having some issues with arthritis in his back legs and had started peeing in the house.  He had such spunk and spirit though.  Look at that happy face!

This is another photo of Aspen on one of our many vacations in Cape May.  This was taken when he was around 13.  He loved coming down here as much as me!

R.I.P. Uncle Leo

I'm saddened to hear the Len Lesser, who played Uncle Leo on Seinfeld passed away yesterday, he was 88 years old.  He was such a funny guy!  He will be missed!
